Witcher 3 Contract An Elusive Thief
This quest can be acquired via a notice posted on the Hierarch Square Notice board.
After grabbing the notice from the board in Hierarch Square, you’ll need find and speak with the fellow who posted the notice. We’ll want to speak with Sylvester Amello who can be found in the marketplace southeast of Hierarch Square, near the bridge leading to the Tretogor Gate.
Note: The quest giver will only appear during day time, so if he’s not there when you arrive, meditate until morning or sometime the next day to spawn him.
Once you speak with Sylvester Amello, he’ll flesh out some additional details regarding the contract and update your objectives.
Activate your Witcher Senses to find some footprints nearby. After examining the initial footprints, you’ll notice that there is a trail of said footprints leading away from the area. Activate your Witcher Sense and follow this trail a short distance until the tracks stop at a wall. At this point, examine the scratch marks on the wall before following them a little further along the path.
When you reach the bridge, the tracks will end and you’ll be required to dive into the water below. Swim to the opposite bank and use your Witcher Senses once again to find the trail of footprints. Follow these until they enter a house.
Once inside, we’ll need to explore the area. Activate Witcher Sense and you can inspect the following:
- The clothes on the floor by the bed on the second floor.
- The Note (Short Letter) on the table beneath the stairs on the ground floor.
After looting the Note, head into your inventory and read the Short Letter item. This will update your objectives.
Note: At this point, you’ll earn 25XP.
Once you have read the Short Letter, a scent trail will appear with Witcher Sense active. Follow the trail out the door and through the streets a short distance until you find the Temple Guard that the trail leads to. Speak with him.
After a short chat, the Doppler will run off. Simply run after him and when you get into range, hit the A/X button to grab him. Another scene will play.
This is an interesting boss fight in which the Doppler enemy will assume Geralt’s form and attack as such. Fortunately, it will only use Geralt’s standard suite of melee and heavy melee attacks making it quite easy to dodge and counter.
After defeating the Doppler, he’ll strike up another conversation. At this point you’ll have a choice to either let him go or to finish him off.
Note: If you kill the Doppler, you’ll earn a pair of Mountain Folk Boots, the Doppler Mutagen and the Doppler Trophy.
Note: If you let him go, you’ll earn 215 Crowns, Diagram: Gnomish Gwyhyr and the Doppler Trophy but will miss out on the Doppler Mutagen and therefore the Doppler Decoction.
Once you have made your decision and either spared/killed the Doppler and have the Doppler Trophy in your possession, return to Sylvester Amello (during the daytime again) to hand in the side-quest.
Note: At this point, you’ll earn 250XP. Depending on your choice, you’ll earn 182 Crowns for killing the Doppler or 91 Crowns for letting him go.
Note: For completing this contract, you’ll earn the ‘The Doppler Effect’ achievement/trophy.
