How to configure a Motorola SB5101 surf router

The Motorola Surfboard SB5101 is one of a number of Comcast-compatible cable modems capable of providing an internet connection to your PC via your home’s coaxial cable connections. However, before you can use Surfboard to connect to the Internet, you’ll need to do the setup and configuration process once. This will configure the modem to use with your PC.

Step 1

Make sure your PC is on and your Surfboard modem has been completely disconnected.

Step 2

Connect the coaxial cable to the lace latch on the back of the Surfboard, then connect the other end to the cable socket.

Step 3

Plug the AC power adapter into the back of the Surfboard and the other end to the wall socket to turn on the modem power. Wait for all the lights on the front of the panel to stop flashing and display a uniform green color.

Step 4

Connect the Ethernet cable to your modem and the other end to your computer’s Ethernet port.

Step 5

Open the Start menu and select “Dashboard,” and then select “Network center and share.”

Step 6

Click the link text “Configure Advanced Adapter” in the left window pane. This will open a new window.

Step 7

Right-click your Ethernet adapter and select “Properties” to open a new dialog box. Select the entry “TCP / IPv4” in the dialog box and select “Properties”.

Step 8

Make sure that the “Get IP address auto” button is selected, and then click OK to exit. Your modem is now fully configured.
